Information about the winery

The name Burmester comes from German and means mayor. Which is not surprising considering the family's roots come from the town of Moelln in Northern Germany. At that time in 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash started a grain trading business in London. They called this business Burmester & Nash. After this, the company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and started shipping Port to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. Actually a completely different sport.

After the 18th century, the company was closed down. This was because Henry and his 2 sins formed a new company for the export of wine, specifically Port, H. Burtmester & Sons.

After Henry's death, Fredrick became a prominent member of the large British community in Portugal. And so Burmester's name also became better known and bigger. Through his great esteemed legacy, a street was later named after him in London, the 'Burmester Road.

In 1834 Fredrick was then forced to leave the country and in 1880 Johan Wilhelm Burmester took over the whole thing and he changed the family name to JW Burrmester & C in 1880.

Much later in 1952, Burmester-Gibert took over the business and this name is still related to the house. Partly due to its enormous know-how, the company has now become an established name Port-land . Every bottle is a hit!
